I had long been interested in how rational choice theory seemed to be a widely subscribed to formula for understanding human behavior. What would happen, I wondered, if we put it into “conversation” with humanists? As a starting point, I canvassed various units on campus to see how they might view such a conversation. Amazingly, within 48 hours I had commitments for $40,000. So much so that the chair of Political Science suggested that I might be appointed in his department. What followed was eventually captured in part in the first issue of my e-journal, Occasion: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities
